One of the first families of Mendocino wine, the Fetzers have a long, storied and prosperous legacy of producing great, environmentally responsible, and affordable wine in the large coastal county north of Sonoma. Masút is the product of Ben and Jake Fetzer, and the 1,500-acre Masút Ranch borders the Home Ranch on which they grew up. The Masút Ranch was purchased by Bobby Fetzer, the brothers’ father, in 1996. He was intrigued by its hillside setting, quick-draining soils, good sun exposure and ocean-influenced winds.

He chose Pinot Noir for the relatively cool outlook (thanks to a gap in the mountains that lets the cool marine air through) in what is the otherwise warmer Redwood Valley. In 1997 the boys and their father planted a 23-acre vineyard in 13 separate blocks with a number of cutting-edge clones. All vineyard work is done by hand and farming practices are organic. Harvesting is done at night to bring the grapes into the winery at optimally cool temperatures. All in all, the focus is on quality while respecting the majesty of the wild, unspoiled Mendocino environment.
